How was training as part of #TEAMVICTA?
This was my fourth marathon and I can honestly say every training block has looked so different. Training for the London Marathon was tough due to professional and personal obligations (and a stubborn hip for a few weeks), but I found myself looking forward to my long runs each week. I also felt extremely motivated knowing I was running and raising money for a charity like VICTA.
How was race day as part of #TEAMVICA?
I was nervous heading to the race after a long trip from Chicago to London, which left me stiff and a little sore. That said, one of my biggest goals was to have fun and really embrace every moment of the marathon. The London Marathon is and was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced – the crowds never let up, runners were giving each other high fives and the city was showing off a beautiful Sunday.
Describe your most memorable moment in your London Marathon journey?
I have a few memorable moments, with the first being able to see my mom and boyfriend at miles 14 and 21 (the Run Dem Crew at mile 21 was also something I’ll never forget). We had meticulously planned out where they would be and seeing them was a boost that I honestly think helped me avoid hitting the wall. There also was a moment around between miles 10-11 (I think around the Bermondsey area) where the crowd outside of a pub was electric on both sides of the street. And of course, Tower Bridge was something else! I expected it was going to be a special moment that provided another boost, but those few moments just blew me away.
What advice would you give to someone taking on the London Marathon as part of #TEAMVICTA?
Fundraise early and often and encourage your network of friends, family, colleagues, etc. to spread the word. You’ll be amazed at how generous people are! In terms of training and prep, do what you know works for you! I think it’s really easy to see what other runners are doing and want to replicate that but sticking to the plan that’s been mapped out for you will get you to the start line feeling confident.
Thank you to Mariah and all of our incredible fundraisers! If you would like to run the London Marathon for VICTA and empower children and young adults who are blind of partially sighted, find out more and sign up here:Â victa.org.uk/london-marathon
