World Braille Day is on the horizon and we want to celebrate!
Every year on the 4th of January we mark Louis Braille’s birthday with World Braille Day. Born in 1809, Louis was a French educator who had become blind during a childhood accident. At only 15, Louis invented the braille coding system which has given those with a vision impairment access to written literature for 200 years. This makes 2025 extra special as the celebration of 200 years of braille!
What is Braille?
Braille is a tactile way of reading and writing. Using a code of six raised dots that can be felt with your fingertips, you can spell and understand anything without seeing it.

Why World Braille Day?
World Braille Day applauds Louis Braille’s legacy and spreads awareness of braille as a crucial tool for VI people to communicate and comprehend independently. Whether it’s getting lost in a book, ordering from a menu, appreciating artwork or reading a bill, braille ensures those with low vision can build the literacy skills they need to navigate the world fully.
Everyone deserves to live accessibly, and World Braille Day serves as a yearly reminder.
Braille Art Competition 2025
Every year at VICTA, we celebrate World Braille Day with an art competition for anyone from 0 to 29 to practice and showcase their braille skills.
