Supporting pre-teens aged 10 to 13 years through VICTA activities and grants

We appreciate that growing up with sight loss can bring practical, emotional and social challenges. Our pre-teen activities are designed to provide hands-on learning in fun, safe and supportive environments.

From educational and creative workshops to outdoor pursuits, the focus is on strengthening verbal communications and social skills that support independence, build self-esteem and increase confidence. And perhaps more importantly, it is an opportunity to meet existing friends or make new ones. It is a great way for younger children to explore the world and start to discover and develop their true capabilities. It is also a great way for pre-teens to get a taste of independence before joining one of our 14-17 activities.

When most people think about children who are blind or partially sighted, they lower their expectations of what is possible. As a result, VI children often grow up underestimating their abilities and not participating in physical activities, directly impacting their health and social connections. Through our pre-teen activities, children who are blind or partially sighted are encouraged to challenge personal limits, develop new skills and increase their physical activity.

Our activities are shaped to act as a catalyst for new ideas and experiences. They are a great way for younger children to explore and better understand the world, make friends and start to discover and develop their true capabilities as they transition into young adults.

Blindness should never be a reason to settle for less.
